Itinerary

* Please note: Itinerary is subject to weather and availability.

Day 1 – Building the foundations of independence
We'll begin by discussing your previous mountain experience and week's aspirations. Heading into the hills, we'll review essential skills, including movement over mountain terrain, equipment choice, and making effective decisions about routes.

Day 2 – Planning and navigating mountain journeys
Today we'll focus on navigation skills – identifying suitable legs, estimating timings, interpreting terrains, and practicing navigation techniques as well as identifying potential hazards.

Day 3 – Preparing for an independent mountain adventureWe'll explore how to interpret mountain weather forecasts, assess routes and make informed decisions about terrain and conditions. You'll help plan the overnight journey, considering the route, suitable camping locations, equipment, food, water and contingency plans.

Day 4 – Your mountain expedition begins
Today we'll set out on our two-day mountain journey, putting your developing skills into practice. As the day draws to a close, we'll identify a suitable overnight location, establish our camp and make dinner. We'll explore mountain camping considerations like shelter, water, weather, safety and responsible camping practices. Depending on the conditions and group, we might explore some fading light navigation.

Day 5 – Completing your mountain adventure
We'll prepare breakfast, pack our equipment and ensure we leave our overnight location as we found it. You'll be supported to lead the return journey, applying the skills you've developed throughout the week. Along the way, we'll consider how changing conditions and fatigue influence mountain decisions.
We'll finish back at Plas y Brenin to review your progress, suggest future adventures and a personal plan for continuing to develop your skills.

This itinerary is indicative. The week will be adapted to suit the group's experience, fitness, weather and mountain conditions. If an overnight camp is not appropriate, an alternative mountain-based programme will be provided.
