This one day workshop is aimed at climbers who work with and coach young people, but it's also useful if you only work with adults. It takes research and theory on the developing child, and the risk of injury if inappropriate activities or training techniques are used to coach them. You'll explore how this research can help shape the way you structure your work to coach children and young people. On a practical level, you'll gain more understanding of how body movement and position impacts upon climbing style, and how to apply this knowledge to achieve increased performance and to help prevent climbing injuries. During this one day workshop you'll develop your coaching techniques for indoor and outdoor climbing. We'll cover precise and accurate footwork, using different handholds, body positioning, and the different techniques used to climb on steep, vertical and slightly overhanging rock. The Climbing Wall Development Instructor qualification trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to develop climbers beyond the basic skills. This includes teaching lead climbing on indoor or outdoor artificial climbing walls and structures with fixed protection. It builds on the skills gained through either the Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor qualifications, one of which must be held in order to access the scheme. Climbing Wall Development Instructors should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered, to a greater or lesser extent, during your training course. Technical Competence (including equipment, belaying and personal skills) Management and Decision Making (including planning, managing participants, decision making, knowledge and demonstration of techniques) Teaching and Learning Skill The Climbing Wall Environment (including access, etiquette and ethics) Detailed information on each of the above topics can be found in the Climbing Wall Development Instructor handbook and the onus is on you to be competent in all of them by the time you come to assessment. Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and it’s not hard to see why. It’s fun, it’s sociable, and it’s done in beautiful places – what’s not to like? We’ll show you what climbing’s all about; we’ll go bouldering, sport climbing, trad climbing, and multi-pitch climbing. And if those words mean nothing to you now, that’s fine because by the end of the week, you will! We’ll start in a bigger group, then split into smaller teams of one instructor to two participants to take on more adventurous climbs and tailor what we cover.

The BMC Routesetting for Coaching workshop is for anyone routesetting or wishing to route set at climbing walls. Whether a teacher who might work alone and wants to set some problems to teach a specific technique, or staff at a climbing wall teaching the NICAS scheme, anyone who does some coaching and wants to improve their routesetting ability in developing technical climbing problems will benefit from the workshop. The aim is to spend the week on ridges and gullies between grades I and III. At times you’ll use one ice axe, whilst at others you may use two. Over the week we’ll tick off some of the most celebrated winter journeys in the Scottish Highlands. We’re perfectly placed to make the most of what winter offers us, whether beautifully formed snow ice high on Ben Nevis, or a soaring ridge in Glen Coe.
This is a guided course; you’ll be teamed up with another guest, with one of our instructors looking after you both. They’ll take care of the route finding, leading and navigating, allowing you to savour the experience. Presenting yourself for a Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Assessment is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, gaining it is a huge achievement. Everyone who’s done it will remember how they felt at the start of the course; anxious, excited, ready. Our team of experienced assessors know this, having been there themselves. We’re here to create the best environment for you to showcase your skills and abilities as a winter mountaineering professional. We want you to feel supported throughout the week and to finish the course feeling you’ve learnt and developed, and ideally with the big tick.
The assessment will be run according to the Mountain Training syllabus and will be divided into a day of personal / guided climbing, a day of mountaineering, and two days of teaching.
