The Objectives

We'll aim to experience a variety of winter scrambling terrain, from rocky ridges and mixed ground to steeper snow-covered slopes, selecting routes appropriate to the group's experience and the prevailing conditions. You'll develop your understanding of movement on winter terrain, efficient use of an ice axe and crampons, route-finding and the techniques used to manage more exposed or technical sections.
During the course, you'll:

  • Explore adventurous mountain ridges and scrambling routes in Eryri.
  • Improve your confidence and efficiency when moving between rock, snow and ice
  • Consolidate ice axe and crampon skills
  • Explore effective movement, balance and route-finding on steeper and more exposed ground
  • Gain experience of appropriate rope systems, anchors and belaying techniques where conditions and terrain require them
  • Develop your ability to identify suitable lines and navigate through complex mountain terrain
  • Understand how snow conditions, weather, terrain and exposure influence route choice and decision-making
  • Build confidence for future adventures

Itinerary

* Please note: Itinerary is subject to weather and availability.

Day 1 – Introducing winter scrambling terrain
We'll begin by discussing your previous winter experience and aspirations for the weekend. After reviewing the forecast, equipment and prevailing conditions, we'll head into the mountains for our first winter scrambling adventure.

Day 2 – A classic winter scrambling adventure
Today we'll aim to undertake a more sustained winter scrambling route, making the most of the available conditions and the group's developing confidence. Eryri offers a wonderful variety of possibilities, from dramatic rocky ridges to mixed winter mountaineering terrain.

Day 3 – Developing confidence and experience
Our final day will build on the previous two days, encouraging you to take a more active role in route planning, assessing conditions and identifying suitable lines through the terrain.

We'll finish with a review of the weekend and suggestions for future winter scrambling adventures.

This itinerary is indicative. Winter scrambling is highly dependent on weather, snow, ice and ground conditions. Routes and activities will be selected to suit the group's experience and prevailing conditions. Specific routes, grades and the presence of snow or ice cannot be guaranteed. Where conditions make winter scrambling unsuitable, alternative mountain activities and technical coaching will be provided.

Experience Required

This course is designed for people who already have experience of winter mountain walking and want to progress onto more technical scrambling terrain.

You should:
Have substantial summer mountain walking experience.
Have completed an introductory winter skills course or gained equivalent practical experience.
Have used an ice axe and crampons on straightforward winter mountain terrain.
Have previous experience of walking on steep snow
Ideally have experience of summer scrambling, including movement on exposed rocky terrain.
Be comfortable with steep ground, exposure and physically demanding mountain days.
Have a good level of fitness for sustained winter mountain journeys, potentially involving significant ascent and descent.
Be prepared for cold, wet and challenging mountain conditions.

You don't need to be an experienced climber, but some familiarity with scrambling, exposure and basic ropework will be beneficial.

The course is intended to develop existing winter mountaineering experience rather than introduce fundamental ice axe and crampon techniques for the first time.
