The Objectives

During the course, you'll:

  • Refine your scrambling movement, balance and footwork on steep and exposed rock
  • Develop effective mountaineering ropework
  • Understand when it is appropriate to move unroped, when protection is required and how to choose efficient techniques.
  • Learn to assess and manage risk and exposure
  • Interpret guidebooks and make effective route-finding decisions
  • Understand your current capabilities, identify areas for further development and make informed decisions about future routes and adventures

Itinerary

* Please note: Itinerary is subject to weather and availability.

Day 1 – Developing movement and judgement
We'll begin by getting to know your experience and aspirations before heading into the mountains for a day on grade 1 terrain.

Day 2 – Mountaineering ropework and technical skills
Today focuses on developing the practical ropework needed for more challenging scrambling routes, such as selecting and using natural anchors, different belaying methods and rope techniques.

Day 3 – Putting the skills into practice
We'll head out on a classic scrambling journey, potentially tackling one of Eryri's excellent Grade 2 routes, to look at decision-making and when different methods might be appropriate

Day 4 – Taking the lead
Our final day brings together the skills developed throughout the course on a more demanding scrambling journey. Where appropriate, this could include a classic Grade 2 or 3 scramble.
We'll finish with a review of your progress, individual feedback and guidance on how to continue developing towards independent scrambling adventures.

This itinerary is an example of what your four days might involve. It will be adapted to suit the weather, conditions, group experience and individual learning needs.

Experience Required

You should already have experience of moving on steep and exposed mountain terrain, together with a working knowledge of basic climbing ropework and belaying. Previous experience of Grade 1 scrambling and some Grade 2 terrain, or outdoor rock climbing at Difficult grade or above, would provide a suitable foundation. Our Advanced Scrambling: 2 day course is an ideal pre-requisite.

A good level of mountain fitness is essential, as the course involves full days on steep, uneven and sometimes exposed ground.

You do not need to be an experienced mountaineer or already be confident tackling Grade 3 scrambles independently. Developing the skills to progress towards these more challenging adventures is one of the main aims of the course.
