Overview

The Rock Climbing Development Instructor qualification is for experienced instructors wishing to develop a participant's rock climbing proficiency. This development may extend to the teaching of lead climbing. The scope of this new award allows qualified instructors to develop climbers wishing to climb both sport and trad routes.

This is an individual assessment to check you meet the required standard in all aspects of the syllabus.

A training course must have been completed or exemption of training must have been sorted from Mountain Training before you can attend the assessment.

The Objectives

You will be assessed in the following key areas to a greater or lesser extend, during your assessment course.

  1. Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills and background knowledge)
  2. Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing participants, decision making, knowledge and demonstration of techniques, personal safety)
  3. Teaching Skills
  4. The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette and ethics)

Itinerary

Day 1

Day: Personal Climbing Competancies on trad and sport climbs at VS 4c and F6a

Day 2

Day: Sport Climbing with Students

Evening: Written Exam Paper

Day 3

Day: Trad Climbing with Students

Experience Required

Post training and before presenting yourself for assessment:

  • You must have logged a minimum of 10 rock climbing teaching days with students at a variety of outdoor venues.
  • You must have led a minimum of 30 single pitch routes using leader placed protection in three different climbing areas at VS 4c or above and recorded them in DLOG.
  • You may include full multi-pitch routes using leader placed protection (up to 50% of the requirement).
  • You must have led a minimum of 30 sport climbs in three different climbing areas at 6a or above and recorded them in DLOG. Up to 50% of this experience can be outside the UK and Ireland.
  • You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved a least two full days of sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment.

Please bring all the equipment you require to be a Rock Climbing Development Instructor.

Don't forget:

  • Small personal first aid kit
  • Water bottle and/or flask
  • Lunch box/bag
  • High factor sunscreen
  • Midge repellent
  • Notebook and pen

Ropes are always provided by Plas y Brenin.

How should I prepare?

You must have completed the Rock Climbing Development Instructor Training course and have the relevant experience required.
Your DLOG should be up to date.
