Overview

The Mountain Training Hill and Moorland Leader qualification is designed to train and assess those who wish to lead hill walking groups on day walks in defined terrain in summer conditions. You'll spend three mainly practical days on the local hills and moors showing us that you've got the skills to meet the standards set by Mountain Training.

What to Expect

You'll be assessed against the Mountain Training Hill and Moorland Qualification Syllabus over three days on the hill. There will be theoretical evening sessions between and also one practical night navigation after dark.

Experience Required

Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:

  • You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
  • You must be familiar with the syllabus
  • You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland
  • You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Hill and Moorland Leader

The Hill and Moorland Leader assessment is 3 days long.

We want to help you focus on achieving your goals so if you're staying with us, comfortable accommodation (with WIFI included) and good food are part of the deal, you don't need to think about sorting this out for yourself. Support is on hand from our friendly, and exceptionally well qualified staff, to help develop your understanding and personal skills. They also help you to formulate an appropriate action plan for your further development.

What do I need to bring?
Your personal and leader kit for walking in hill and moorland terrain. Please makes sure you have sufficient equipment and be prepared to be ‘on the hill’ every day. On one of the days you will need to show us your leader’s rucksack and its contents. On one evening there will be a night navigation exercise. We will provide maps but, you might like to bring your laminated copy of OS 17 Snowdon & Conwy Valley 1:25,000. You’ll find a fine permanent marker useful for writing on maps and I’m sure it goes without saying you should bring a suitable compass.
How should I prepare?

Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:

  • Have completed your consolidation period action plan
  • You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been grantedexemption)
  • You must be familiar with the syllabus
  • You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland
  • You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment
