Overview

Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and it’s not hard to see why. It’s fun, it’s sociable, and it’s done in beautiful places – what’s not to like? We’ll show you what climbing’s all about; we’ll go bouldering, sport climbing, trad climbing, and multi-pitch climbing. And if those words mean nothing to you now, that’s fine because by the end of the week, you will! We’ll start in a bigger group, then split into smaller teams of one instructor to two participants to take on more adventurous climbs and tailor what we cover. You should leave the course knowing why climbing’s amazing and be able to confidently fit a harness, tie onto a rope, and belay (keep your partner safe).

Every course is unique as we tailor each one to the team and the weather, but this should give a flavour of what you might get up to. Monday Informal welcome chat with our staff and your course members; Head to stores to get kitted out; Drive to a bouldering venue (climbing on small rocks above crash mats) and climb on rock; Visit a small, friendly crag and learn to put a harness on, tie onto the rope, and belay (keeping someone safe by using the rope); Climb some fun routes ; Return to Plas y Brenin for tea and cake! Tuesday Travel to a different crag and rock type and spend the day climbing; Have a go at a variety of climbs and styles; Consolidate movement and ropework skills; Look at the basics of how the ropes are anchored at the top; Try abseiling; Return to Plas y Brenin for more tea and cake! Wednesday Go to another new crag and rock type for a day of sport climbing (clipping pre-placed bolts); Use sport climbing specific kit like Clickups and clipsticks; Learn the basics of how to lead a sport climb and thread the anchors (commonly done with an extra safety rope); Return to Plas y Brenin for more tea and cake! Thursday Ratio lowers to one instructor to two participants; Introduction to multi-pitch climbing (long climb) often on a mountain crag with beautiful views; Return to Plas y Brenin for more tea and cake! Friday A further day at a ratio of one to two, commonly spent multi-pitch climbing, consolidating skills, and developing confidence; Return to Plas y Brenin for, you guessed it, more tea and cake, and a fond farewell.
