The Objectives

We'll explore the key movements involved in rolling through progressive exercises, individual feedback, and repeated practice. As your skills improve, we'll explore how to maintain composure following an unexpected capsize and adapt your technique to different situations.
During the course, you'll:

  • Refine your rolling technique: Improve body position, blade control, timing and coordination for a more efficient roll
  • Build consistency and reliability
  • Increase underwater confidence: Remain composed, orientate yourself and prepare effectively following a capsize
  • Identify common rolling faults and use exercises to improve your technique
  • Adapt to different situations
  • Develop greater independence: Learn techniques for evaluating your own performance and structuring effective practice
  • Prepare for more challenging conditions: Where appropriate, practice rolling in progressively more realistic situations, supported by your instructor

Itinerary

* Please note: Itinerary is subject to weather and availability.

Day 1 – Building the foundations

We'll begin by discussing your previous experience, current rolling ability and personal goals for the week.
Using sheltered water, we'll explore the essential components of an effective roll, including body position, blade control, rotation and timing.
Through individual coaching and progressive exercises, we'll establish or refine a rolling technique suited to you.
Key themes: Technique, confidence, movement patterns and individual development.

Day 2 – Developing an effective roll
Today we'll build on the foundations from day one, focusing on coordination, efficiency and the movements that contribute to a successful roll.
We'll use a range of exercises to address individual challenges and help you develop greater awareness of your body and blade throughout the movement.
There will be plenty of opportunities for supported practice, feedback and consolidation.
Key themes: Coordination, efficiency, technical refinement and purposeful practice.

Day 3 – Building consistency and confidence
With your rolling technique becoming more familiar, we'll focus on developing consistency.
We'll explore how to prepare effectively, maintain composure underwater and recognise what may be causing unsuccessful attempts.
Depending on your progress, we'll begin by introducing variations in starting position and capsize situations to develop greater adaptability.
Key themes: Reliability, underwater confidence, troubleshooting and adaptability.

Day 4 – Taking your roll further
Today we'll explore how to transfer your developing rolling skills into more realistic sea kayaking situations.
Where appropriate, we may practise rolling following less predictable capsizes or in more challenging water conditions.
We'll also discuss the limitations of rolling as a recovery technique, how to assess the conditions and when alternative recovery strategies may be more appropriate.
Activities will be carefully selected to match individual progress and confidence.
Key themes: Adaptability, decision-making, managing unexpected capsizes and realistic practice.

Day 5 – Consolidation and future development
Our final day provides an opportunity to bring together everything you've learned during the week.
We'll focus on consolidating your technique, practicing the areas that need further attention and developing confidence in your ability to continue improving independently.
Depending on your progress, this may include further technical coaching, more challenging rolling exercises or additional time to establish consistency in sheltered conditions.
We'll finish with individual feedback, a review of your progress and a personal development plan to help you maintain and improve your roll after the course.
Key themes: Consolidation, independence, reliability and continued progression.
The programme is flexible and will be adapted to individual experience, progress, weather and sea conditions. Rolling in challenging water is not guaranteed, and participants will progress at different rates.

Experience Required

Ideal for sea kayakers who want to develop a more dependable roll, an existing pool roll is necessary. It may lack consistency but should work frequently in a pool setting
You should be comfortable paddling a sea kayak on sheltered sea environments, wearing and undertaking supported capsize and recovery exercises.
Please see our 'learn to roll' courses if you are new to rolling.
