Few mountain experiences can match the excitement and satisfaction of following a classic scrambling route through the dramatic landscapes of Eryri. Our Eryri Classic Scrambles Long Weekend offers three days of guided adventures, giving you the opportunity to explore a variety of outstanding routes with experienced Plas y Brenin instructors.

The Objectives

With an extra day to explore, we'll aim to experience different types of scrambling terrain, from rocky ridges and exposed traverses to atmospheric gullies and mountain summits. Along the way, you'll refine your movement skills, develop your route-finding abilities and learn more about the judgement involved in navigating challenging mountain terrain.

During the long weekend, you'll:

  • Explore some of the area's famous rocky ridges and classic mountain routes
  • Improve your balance, footwork and ability to move efficiently over steep and rocky terrain
  • Learn how to identify suitable scrambling lines and interpret route descriptions
  • Understand how terrain, weather and conditions influence route choice and decision-making
  • Build confidence negotiating exposed sections of scrambling terrain
  • Discover new routes and develop the confidence to continue exploring Eryri's mountains

Itinerary

Day 1 – A classic introduction
We'll begin by discussing your experience and aspirations before heading to one of Eryri's classic scrambles. We'll get to know the group with an adventurous mountain journey, with coaching and guidance where appropriate, helping you refine your movement and route-finding skills.

Day 2 – Exploring new terrain

We'll aim to explore a different style of scrambling, perhaps involving a longer ridge, a more sustained rocky route or a journey through one of Eryri's dramatic mountain environments.

Day 3 – A memorable mountain journey
Depending on the group's experience and the conditions, we'll tackle a rewarding route with opportunities to put your developing skills into practice. You might take a more active role in route finding and decision-making, supported by your instructor.
We'll finish with a review of the weekend and suggestions for further scrambling adventures.

This is an indicative itinerary. Routes and activities will be adapted to suit the group's experience, weather and mountain conditions.

Experience Required

You should be a confident hillwalker with some experience of moving on steep, rocky terrain. You should have experience using your hands on rock, being around exposed sections, and have a good level of mountain fitness. Previous experience of Grade 1 scrambling is beneficial. You don't need technical climbing or ropework experience.
