Overview

There will be a mixture of practical sessions and journeying. Planning and incorporating snow observations, with the weather and avalanche forecasts, will form an important part of the course. Other key topics covered include selecting appropriate equipment, including foot traction devices and use of an ice axe, the winter environment, track setting, winter navigation, leadership and group management. | You’ll be learning from experienced International Mountain Leaders and Mountain Guides who will help you develop your Winter knowledge and leadership, whilst supporting your progression towards assessment.

The Objectives

You’ll have completed comprehensive training against the UIMLA 2024 Standard, helping you move towards working as a leader internationally in the mountains. You’ll have a clear understanding of how to personally progress to be successful on the Winter IML assessment.

Itinerary

The course timetable will be largely dependent on the weather and snow conditions. Each day will begin with a weather, snow and avalanche briefing; from which a plan for the day will follow.

Day 1

Introduction to the course, equipment selection for Scottish Winter. A mountain journey with a focus on snow and weather observations, in addition to equipment use including foot traction devices.

Days 2-4

Mountain journeys as appropriate to the forecast with specific focuses on winterising our navigation, leading and managing groups in winter, route choice, track setting and the winter environment. There will also be sessions on winterising your ropework, using an ice axe as a leader, and emergency shelters.

Experience Required

You should have completed the International Mountain Leader Summer Training course. | Whilst not compulsory, it’s advisable to gain some Winter experience in Scotland prior to attending this Mountain Training accredited course, as the weather and conditions are typically different to those experienced in other countries, for example the Alps. We would recommend that you complete the SAIS Be Avalanche Aware eLearning course, found here: https://learning.sportscotland.org.uk/product?catalog=co_GML_BAAP_2025 This will aid familiarity with the terminology and layout of the Scottish Avalanche bulletin published by SAIS: Home - Scottish Avalanche Information Service | Mountain Training also have an e-learning module on Snow and Avalanches, accessed when you log in to your DLOG, that would also be useful preparation for this course. It’s never too early to begin learning about the environment in Winter, especially trees and animal tracks. Come along with some fun facts to share with your peers.
