Overview

A lowland leader qualification will allow you to lead groups on day trips in lowland countryside in summer conditions. You'll cover the areas of knowledge you need to guide people in the countryside and woodland, including: leadership skills and group management, walking skills, planning a walk, basic mapwork and route-finding skills, equipment hazards, and emergency procedures. We'll also look at: environmental awareness, conservation, access, and land ownership. Our friendly, highly qualified instructors will put you through your paces on this mostly practical course, to hone your skills in these areas.

The Objectives

- To get you acquainted with the Lowland Leader scheme and introduce you to all the skills you’ll need to get qualified.
- To have a mix of indoor and outdoor learning with the guidance of our expert instructors in a supportive, friendly environment.
- To develop an action plan for your consolidation period and help prepare you for your Lowland Leader assessment.

There will be theoretical evening sessions between 5:30-6:30pm.

Experience Required

Before you book onto a Lowland Leader training course, make sure you have done the following:

  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • You must be registered on the scheme https://www.mountain-training.org/help/faqs/registration
  • You must have recorded a minimum of 10 varied walks in Lowland terrain where the use of a map is required (ideally these will be recorded on DLOG) which can have taken place at any point (pre- or post-registration)

What do I need to bring?

·        Walking Boots

·        Walking socks

·        Wicking base layer

·        Walking trousers – usually these will be a modern ‘technical’ quick drying fabric

·        Fleece

·        Waterproofs

·        Woolly hat

·        Gloves – need to be warm

·        Rucksack- ideally 35 litres min

·        Headtorch

·        Personal First aid kit

·         Spare clothing – e.g. extra fleece, belay jacket, spare gloves, spare hat

·        Seasonally think about - Sun cream/insect repellent/spare food/sun hat/sunglasses

·        Drinks bottle and/or flask

·        Compass (Silva Expedition 4 recommended)

·        A watch for timing navigation legs

 

You will find a fine permanent marker useful for writing on your maps and a pen handy for taking notes and writing your action plan. We will mostly operate on map OS 17 1:25000 Snowdon and the Conwy Valley and you should bring your copy of this - ideally laminated. Other maps will be provided by us as required

How should I prepare?
You'll get most benefit from the course if you're fit, and have some experience of using a map and compass. You should have an interest in Leading others and helping them to learn about the countryside. Make sure you are registered with Mountain Training and that you have familiarised yourself with the Lowland Leader Qualification syllabus.
