Overview

In this Mountain Training accredited course, you’ll cover the areas of knowledge you need to guide people in the countryside and woodland. This includes leadership skills and group management, walking skills, planning, basic mapwork and route-finding skills, equipment hazards, and emergency procedures. We’ll also look at environmental awareness, conservation, access, and land ownership. You’ll have two enjoyable days walking around the lowlands of Snowdonia stretching your legs whilst learning everything you need for this award.

The Objectives

To get you acquainted with the Lowland Leader scheme and introduce you to all the skills you’ll need to get qualified. To have a mix of indoor and outdoor learning with the guidance of our expert instructors in a supportive, friendly environment. To develop an action plan for your consolidation period and help prepare you for your Lowland Leader assessment.

Itinerary

You’ll spend two days covering the key elements from the Mountain Training syllabus, including: Leadership Skills and Group Management Walking Skills Planning a Walk Basic Mapwork and Route-Finding Skills Equipment Hazards and Emergency Procedures Environmental Awareness, Conservation, Access and Land Ownership There will be theoretical evening sessions between 5:30-6:30pm.


Experience Required

You must have either an up-to-date logbook (preferably DLOG) with evidence of 10 varied walks in low-level terrain (pre- or post-registration) OR have attended a walking and navigation personal skills training course recognised by Mountain Training (Hill Skills or Mountain Skills) You’ll get most benefit from the course if you’re fit, and have some experience of using a map and compass. You should have an interest in leading others and helping them to learn about the countryside. Make sure you are registered for the scheme with Mountain Training and that you have familiarised yourself with the Lowland Leader Qualification syllabus. You should also make sure you have a log book to show your experience meets the Mountain Training prerequisites.

A lowland leader qualification will allow you to lead groups on day trips in lowland countryside in summer conditions.

*If your course is based at Plas Y Brenin, Capel Curig, residential prices include catering from the morning of your course start date and cover the duration of your course, accommodation starts on the night before your course commences to the morning of the last day of your booking.
