Overview

Whether you’re a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, this Mountain Training accredited course prepares you to supervise safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Our friendly, highly qualified instructors will use their experience to equip you with the skills needed whilst we have a good time climbing on some great crags.

The course runs over two days for those who have completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training as it doesn’t cover the indoor element of the qualification.

The Objectives

You’ll gain the skills you need to supervise climbers on single pitch crags and boulders.
You’ll cover the skills on the Rock Climbing Instructor syllabus, after which you can go for a period of consolidation before your Rock Climbing Instructor assessment.

Itinerary

Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills, abseiling, background knowledge)
Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing other staff, managing participants, knowledge and demonstration of techniques)
Teaching Skills
The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette and ethics)
You’ll find detailed information on each of the above topics in the Rock Climbing Instructor handbook.


Experience Required

Before attending training you must have done the following:

Registered with Mountain Training for the scheme
Be at least 18 years old
Be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland
Have led 15 routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
Have led 15 routes at a climbing wall.
Have led 5 routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
Have completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training.*
You should also; be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups
*If you have not done this, you must attend a three day Rock Climbing Instructor training course.

The qualification allows you to take people climbing on single pitch crags. It takes your rock climbing skills and develops them into what you need to look after others. Our team of instructors are really keen rock climbers with years of professional experience who deliver fun and enjoyable courses.

This is the two day course for those who have done CWI Training.
