Overview

You're an experienced rock climber who wants to introduce people to climbing. Whether you're a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, this course prepares you to supervise safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Our friendly, highly qualified instructors will equip you with the technical competence, teaching skills, and management and decision making, skills to become a single pitch instructor. The course runs over three days for those who have not completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training. A two-day version is available for people who have completed their Climbing Wall Instructor Training.

The Objectives

  • You'll gain the skills you need to supervise climbers on single pitch crags, purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders.
  • You'll cover the skills on the Rock Climbing Instructor syllabus, after which you can go for a period of consolidation before your Rock Climbing Instructor assessment.

Itinerary

You'll spend three days covering a mix of theory and practical skills development which will take in:


Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills, abseiling, background knowledge)

Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing other staff, managing participants, knowledge and demonstration of techniques)

Teaching Skills

The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette and ethics)

You'll find detailed information on each of the above topics in the Rock Climbing Instructor handbook.

Experience Required

You must;

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland
  • Have led 15 routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
  • Have led 15 routes at a climbing wall.
  • Have led 5 routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
  • You should also; be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups

Plas y Brenin will cover the whole Mountain Training syllabus. We have access to some of the best single pitch venues in North Wales all within easy drive of our centre.
